About

Hi, I’m Chris King - that's younger me on the right enjoying an ice lolly on the beach at Dover. This bit is all about me!

I was born and raised in Kent, as were most of my father’s ancestors for many generations before me. Kent is in my blood.

I became interested in family history in the early 1980s when my grandfather regaled me with some fragments of information about his Tournay ancestors, who lived just along the coast at Saltwood and Hythe. I love a good story, so I set off to find out more and to make sense of it all. Chasing my ancestors quickly became a passion and remains so to this day. I take great pleasure in the process of research and of course in the thrill of its outcome. Let me help you discover your family stories.

My extensive experience enables me to research individuals or whole families back at least to the 1830s throughout England, Scotland and Wales and discover their stories. A lot of research can be achieved on line, using civil records, census returns, wills, etc., but it may also require records to be accessed at local or national archives if they are not otherwise available. Before the 1830s parish records become the key resource and though many are now on line, many more are not.

I specialise in researching the people and families of Kent and piecing together their unique stories. I work with all the types of records where our ancestors may lurk and have taken a number of my own family lines back to the 1600s, and in one case beyond. This requires meticulous attention to detail, careful analysis of evidence, the ability to read old handwriting styles, and a nose for detective work.
